I recently completed a two year program obtaining a BS degree from the Business Management sciences department at the University of Phoenix. In May of 1989, I received an Associates Degree in Arts & Sciences from Richand College in Dallas. I plan to continue my Education with the University of Phoenix for a Masters degree in Business Administration and Technology Management (MBA/TM.) The University of Phoenix is accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Cornell, Stanford, Northwestern, and Purdue Universities are accredited through the same association.
While at Richland College, computer science courses were chosen for any electives not determined by the core curriculum. My formal education did not take off until six years ago when I enrolled in an accelerated on-line business program offered through the University of Phoenix. Previously it had been a slow process of taking two classes a semester while working full time. UOP offers a two year Management Science program that can be taken totally on-line through communication software called Convene (tm). Convene, formerly called Bizlink (tm), allowed me to access my classes through the Internet or via a direct dial modem. The classes were five or six weeks long and used the same books as you would find in any university course. It compares to taking a five week summer course only this is all year long. The benefit from this is the ability to organize school activities around a full time job and family. Attendance is seven days a week but you can login as many times a day as needed to attend discussions, group projects, and turn in homework, papers, quizzes, and exams. There is a lot more writing involved through UOP On-line than there is in a regular classroom environment. It is not an easy program. It is however a perfect fit for the busy professional that has a deep desire to continue his or her formal education. I am currently a Project Manager/Network Analyst for Associates Information Services in Las Colinas, Texas. It is a subsidiary of Associates First Capital Corp. I have responsibility for engineering network management solutions at the enterprise level. This includes maintaining the hardware and supporting the integrated applications that run on the servers. The enterprise servers are used for network management, corporate help desks, fault management, finance and insurance. The applications include HP OpenView Network Node Manager, BMC Patrol, CiscoWorks, Optivity, Peregrine, Tivoli TME10, Remedy ARS, Telamon Telalert, and any other network application that is needed as part of our business requirements. Oracle and Sybase are the underlying databases supporting many of the applications.
